How to Attend TV Show Tapings

Celebrities are the most accessible, oddly enough, when they're at work. If you're a Jon Stewart fan and you show up at his favorite deli while he's eating, chances are you're probably going to disturb him. But if you get tickets to a taping of The Daily Show that he hosts in New York City, your chance of shaking his hand and getting him to sign something is much better.

The stars who work in live television depend on the audience to help them do their job. For sitcoms, the audience provides the laugh track. If the audience doesn't laugh at a joke, the writers will scramble to modify it or come up with a new one. So when you watch a television sitcom like "Friends," you're hearing the actual audience laugh that was at the taping that day and know that they had some input into the final version as well. For late night shows like Stewart's, the host needs you to laugh at his jokes or he'll be left high and dry on national TV. And on talk shows like "Ellen" and "Oprah," the host and producers need to be able to feel out the audience so they know what's working or not working.

Most TV shows that have a live audience also have a "warm-up guy" whose job is to tell a few jokes, lay out the ground rules, maybe do some audience participation and get everyone in the studio totally warmed up for the show. If there's a delay or a break in shooting, this guy has to keep things going so the audience doesn't get bored and leave. He's also your best bet to get to the on-screen talent and sometimes will even bring a star up to the audience section.

Some stars will hang around after and talk to the audience one on one. Some won't, but the warm-up guy will talk to anyone, and if you can make him feel important, he can quite often help you get to the people you really want to get to.

Don't ask the producer if you can go backstage--he'll say no. Don't ask an intern if he can get something signed--he'll say no. But that warm-up guy is usually working so hard (and is maybe even a little annoyed that he's not the star of the show) that you can sometimes get him to do you a favor if you play your cards right.

TV show taping tickets do not cost money, except for special circumstances like concerts, awards shows and sporting events. Sitcom tapings and game shows are free of charge. Often the audience will be much small than you expected ("The Daily Show" seats maybe 100 people) while half the audience noise in a "Wheel of Fortune" taping is from the crew itself.

The peak television production season is generally August through March for most of the major networks. These include ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN, WB, TNN, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Situation comedies, reality specials and game shows are the ones most likely to require a live audience since dramas don't require audience interaction. Remember that a TV show taping is not a quick prospect. You're not there for just the half hour you see during the final product. You've got to be there early, you've got to sit around while things are getting set up, you've got to go through the "warm up" then the cast will likely do one rehearsal from start to finish. Then they'll film several takes for each scene so the editors have plenty of options. This can take a long time (often up to eight hours) and they're not going to serve lunch or dinner partway through (although of course the actors can eat all they want from the catering table backstage...and often come out on stage eating to rub in the fact that they're eating and you can't). But it's still fun. Just make sure to eat before you go in, make sure to use the restroom before you take your seat, and turn off your cell phone!

Often the funniest part of a live TV taping isn't the acting itself, it's what goes on behind the scenes. If an actor is making a joke, the actors off camera will often react to what he or she is saying in an unexpected way. People will crack up, others will adlib, shots will get messed up and have to be repeated. It's an interesting look at what goes on behind the scenes of television, even if you don't get to meet the star of the show.

To get a ticket, see the resources below. You normally have to make reservations for popular shows months in advance because they fill up quickly. If all else fails, you can sometimes find studio workers handing out tickets in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard (where the famous handprints are) and in front of the Hollywood and Highland shopping complex next door.

Once you have your ticket, the rules are simple--applaud when you're told to, laugh when you think something is funny, don't yell out at random times, don't curse, don't disrupt other people around you, stay seated until the end of the show (toilet breaks come before the show, not during) and don't take photographs.

Remember, if a scene has to be redone, you're going to have to laugh all over again. Know going in that this isn't so much about your entertainment as it is your assistance in putting together a good show. If you get bored easily by repetition or having to sit for a long period of time, attending a live TV taping probably isn't for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy watching how television shows are created and don't mind following the rules, you'll have a lot of fun, learn a lot, and maybe even get to meet (or at least watch for a long time) your favorite star!

ITIL 101: Understanding the Basics

Article Presented by:
Copyright © 2007-2008 Anne Sych

In the world of IT management, ITIL is the buzzword being heard around the globe. So what is ITIL and how does it affect your organization? Let's take a closer look!

Today's IT management has become more and more complex causing organizations worldwide to seek a standards based approach to IT management. The "IT Infrastructure Library", commonly referred to as ITIL(r), has become the most popular framework for best practices standardization worldwide.

While ITIL(r) is now embraced globally; it was originally created by the United Kingdom Government. ITIL (r) was developed in the 1980's by the CCTA, a predecessor of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC). There, a team of CCTA staff embarked on documenting a common sense approach to managing IT services that would improve consistency while maintaining cost efficiency. Using a compilation of then best practices and their experience, the first IT Infrastructure Library(r) was developed. The OGC, still owns ITIL(r).

So what exactly is ITIL(r)? ITIL(r) is a series of best practice documentation materials that are used to aid the implementation of a framework for IT Service Management, or quoting the OGC: "a consistent and comprehensive documentation of best practice for IT Service Management". Since its development in the 1980s, ITIL(r) has undergone two major revisions:

  • Version 1 - 1986 – 1999: The original function-based practice of 40+ books dealing with a variety of IT practices.
  • Version 2 – 1999 – 2006: V2 of ITIL(r).

Process-based practice of 8 'sets' and the globally accepted best practice framework for ITSM (Information Technology Service Management). The sets include:

  • Service Support
  • Service Delivery
  • Planning to Implement Service Management
  • ICT Infrastructure Management
  • Business Perspectives Volumes I and II
  • Software Asset Management
  • Application Management
  • Security Management

Soon to be released in 2007 is Version 3. This new updated version will include:

  • Version 3 – 2007 - ??: V3 of ITIL(r).

Service lifecycle-based practice will incorporate the essentials of V1 and V2 and tested current best practice for ITSM. Five lifecycle titles forming the core of V3 ITIL(r) practice will include:

  • Service Strategies
  • Service Design
  • Service Transition
  • Service Operation
  • Continual Service Improvement

While Version 3 will include improved and modernized practices, tried and true standards from Versions 1 and 2 will be preserved. "These practices are still best of breed in our industry and still used every day. We have surrounded, enhanced and updated them with a broader scope for ITSM that widens the visibility of ITIL(r) and onto the radar of senior business and IT executives."
  • So if you have not done so already, now is the time to come on board with ITIL(r) best practices for IT management. Many organizations provide ITIL(r) education, training and certification. More information can be found at the OGC website (www.ogc.gov.uk).

  • Google Reveals More Linking Secrets To Webmasters

    Article Presented by:
    Copyright © 2008 Titus Hoskins

One of the most problematic and confusing issues most webmasters have with Google concerns linking. How your links are ranked? How you should link out? How you should construct your internal links? How you should get more inbound links? How many links should you have on a page? And the list of questions goes on...

Perhaps, the most annoying aspect for the struggling webmaster, has been Google's secrecy in how it actually ranks links and pages. Google's whole PageRank and Ranking Algorithm is so complex that no one can fully boast they understand how the whole system works.

Google's ranking secrecy and complexity has probably been well-planned mainly because there are millions of webmasters who would like to "game" the Google Algorithm and achieve high keyword rankings through manipulation with so-called "black-hat" SEO techniques and reverse engineering.

Wouldn't it be ironic if this whole secrecy and complexity is more of a smokescreen rather than an actual deception on Google's part. What if the keys to the kingdom are actually yours for the taking? What if the solution is hiding in plain sight for everyone to see? What if the secret to high rankings in Google is not a secret at all? Wouldn't that be a hoot!

Actually, that's not a far-fetched assumption to make, mainly because many of Google's linking policies and recommendations are freely given by Google. Whether you can believe Google is actually giving you the goods is another issue that we'll put on the back-burner for another day; but for now, Google's advice on link building is rather generous and informative.

As a part of Links Week held recently, Google's Maile Ohye gave some pointers on what Google is looking for and how it does its index ranking. No big surprise that content and inbound links are the two most important factors. This is what most SEO experts have been saying for years.

A site's content is one of the main factors. Therefore, you should have a compelling site with interesting information and/or offer quality products, entertainment, opinions...

    (Quoting Maile Ohye)

"One of the strongest ranking factors is my site's content. Additionally, perhaps my site is also linked from three sources -- however, one inbound link is from a spammy site. As far as Google is concerned, we want only the two quality inbound links to contribute to the PageRank signal in our ranking."

"Given the user's query, over 200 signals (including the analysis of the site's content and inbound links as mentioned above) are applied to return the most relevant results to the user."

"As many of you know, relevant, quality inbound links can affect your PageRank (one of many factors in our ranking algorithm). And quality links often come naturally to sites with compelling content or offering a unique service."

    (End Quote)

Then Maile Ohye explained further how to create unique and compelling content for your site:

    (Quoting Maile Ohye)

  • Start a blog: make videos, do original research, and post interesting stuff on a regular basis. If you're passionate about your site's topic, there are lots of great avenues to engage more users.

  • Teach readers new things, uncover new news, be entertaining or insightful, show your expertise, interview different personalities in your industry and highlight their interesting side. Make your site worthwhile.

  • Participate thoughtfully in blogs and user reviews related to your topic of interest. Offer your knowledgeable perspective to the community.

  • Provide a useful product or service. If visitors to your site get value from what you provide, they're more likely to link to you.

  • (End Quote)

SEO experts have been telling webmasters for years that creating valuable, unique, relevant useful content is one of the best ways to get your site and pages highly ranked in Google. If you create valuable content then other sites will want to link to you naturally.

Linking out to other sites should be done in a "common sense" manner and it's a way of offering value to your visitor's experience. We expect helpful relevant links when we visit other sites since it's a natural way a good quality site should work; so be careful of linking out to spammy sites that only offer pages of links with very little or no unique content.

There are several things every prudent webmaster should be checking like making sure your site hasn't been hacked and hidden links placed on your site without your knowledge; those with WordPress blogs should be installing the latest security measures and updates. Make sure you keep checking all your outbound links regularly since you may initially link out to a valuable resource, but over time this page may be closed or replaced with one of those spammy-links-holding pages. It can happen to the best of us.

What has confused things lately is all the "link buying" which Google greatly discourages and has shown its displeasure by de-ranking many paid directories. The size of your "wallet" shouldn't be the determining factor in how pages and content are ranked. If you're selling a link, it should have the "no-follow" tag so that it doesn't pass PageRank along and confuse the system. Policing or deciding what is or what is not a "paid link" has become a major problem for the search engines, including Google.

You should not have more than "100 links on a page" as this can overload the search engine robots that regularly crawl the web, indexing pages. Likewise, your site's "linking architecture" should be natural and easy for both your visitors and the robots to follow. Make sure your important pages are no more than a few clicks away from your homepage.

As to interior linking, the two main points being: Intuitive Navigation for your visitors and Crawlable Text Links for the search engine robots. Use descriptive anchor text links that explain your content to your visitors. The anchor text is the underlined clickable part of the link and many SEO experts suggest you place your keywords or variations of them in your anchor text.

Make sure your site is transparent. Do not use "link cloaking" on your site. Make sure what your visitor sees is what the robots are indexing. Use a 301 Redirect if you have permanently moved any webpages. Again, there is stressed the need for a sitemap as this can be very helpful for both your visitors and robots to see and find all your valuable content. Make sure you have a sitemap and all your important pages are listed on it.

One final note, many professional webmasters and marketers don't worry about PageRank as much as they are concerned with SERPs. Getting those top rankings for their sites in the search engine results is what really matters. Again, quality content and building quality links play an important role in achieving those top spots and maybe Google has already given you the formula for getting them.

Why Domain Name Appraisal Is So Important?

    Article Presented by:
    Copyright © 2008 John Khu

People who are looking to buy an expired domain always demand to know the past history of the domain, how it performed on the web and its traffic. In fact, they want know everything about the domain before committing to make the purchasing decision. They may never buy an expired domain name from you, unless you show that the domains that they are purchasing from you are worth their hard earned money. In this regard, you may need to establish the commercial viability of a particular expired domain by providing a comprehensive expired domain appraisal report to your prospective buyer.

There are several reasons why you should seek an appraisal report on a particular expired domain. Here are some of the reasons why you should seek an appraising report for your expired domain name:

To see if the expired domain in question has any real value

To see if the expired domain can provide any commercial gains to the prospective buyer.

To impress your prospective client about the domain

Apart from these reasons, there are several other important reasons that need you to create an expired domain appraisal report:

Domain name appraisal studies are almost free of cost and a number of services offer this service. You can use a good one to appraise your expired domains.

Some of the expired domains that you ignore may be potential money spinners. Hence, you may need to get a detailed appraisal study carried out on all good looking expired domains. Never let a good domain slip away from your hand, just because you did not carry out an appraisal study on it.

It is easy to convince a potential buyer on the commercial viability of an expired domain with a ready made appraisal report. If you can show that your expired domain can help the buyer in a number of ways, then it is possible that you can ask for a better price from your customer.

An expired domain appraisal report is a guide to your domain. It can divulge a lot of information about your domain like previous ranking, possible traffic rate, incoming links, the type of web site, products or services sold there and the page ranking on major search engines.

An appraisal report on an expired domain also provides you an idea whether to place an auction on the said domain or not. Many times, we may waste our time by placing bid on a number of disappointing names that are inconsequential and a waste of time.

Major expired domain traders ensure that appraisal report is available for every type of expired domain names. In fact, every expired domain that they sell to their customers comes packaged with a comprehensive appraisal report. In this way, a prospective buyer will know whether to buy an expired domain or not. An appraisal report for an expired domain is just like a mirror that reflects the basic characters of a web domain.

    Petit Larceny: Not Always Petty

    Article Presented by:
    Copyright © 2008 Warren Redlich

Petit Larceny, sometimes referred to as Petty Larceny, is defined in New York State as a theft of property valued at less than $1000. In contrast, Grand Larceny is a theft of property at least $1000 in value.

A lot of people mistakenly assume that a misdemeanor is such a small crime that the offense will not lead to jail time. This is often true, but jail time is possible.

In the state of New York, petit larceny is classified as a Class A Misdemeanor, which is subject to up to one year in jail, along with the assessments of fines, restitution and court costs. In most cases a good attorney will get the charges reduced to something less.

According to the New York Penal Code Section S 70.15, a conviction for a Class A Misdemeanor is subject to up to one year in jail, provided certain other conditions are not met. If the offender uses a weapon in the process of the crime, then the jail time will be mandated to a minimum of one year. If the offender had been convicted of other crimes in the previous five years, then the judge is permitted to consider this additional information when he or she considers sentencing.

    Options

When facing the judge on a Class A Misdemeanor, such as shoplifting, it is frequently in your best interests to consult with a criminal defense attorney. The reason is because prosecutors and judges in New York State have a lot of flexibility, and an attorney will understand how to help you negotiate with the court to ensure the best possible outcome.

If it is your first offense, a lawyer could possibly resolve the case with an "ACOD" (Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal - sometimes called an ACD). In essence, this is a "keep your nose clean for six months" result, which if completed without any further criminal matters, then your record will be wiped clean.

An ACOD frequently involves community service and restitution.

Every case is unique, so not everyone will be able to expect the best possible outcome of an ACOD, but it is worth pursuing. Your defense attorney will have a better idea, based on his knowledge of the law and his experience in the courtroom, as to what could be expected at sentencing.

    Not First Offense

Even if this offense is not your first, an attorney might be able to negotiate a deal for you. Defendants can work with the assistance of an attorney to obtain a range of different results.

    Fighting The Charges

Fighting a petit larceny may be the best option in some cases. If the charge is shoplifting, chances are that the store's security or the police officer found you in possession of the goods that you are accused of shoplifting, or perhaps they have you on video. Still, police and prosecutors often make mistakes along the way.

You have to consider what evidence that the police have against you, and the judge you are facing. There many factors that come into play in making a decision.

A good criminal defense lawyer will know the landmines and how to navigate through the dangers, to hopefully bring you to a conclusion in which you are satisfied with the outcome.

    Innocent

It is true that you are innocent until proven guilty, and in some instances, you may actually be "not guilty" as charged. It happens sometimes where officers pick the wrong person out of the crowd and file charges that do not reflect the facts, and there are cases where the "complainant" doesn't have good records to document the alleged offense.

If this is the case, your defense lawyer will be your best friend. Your attorney will know how to show the judge that you were falsely charged in this case. Your defense attorney will know how to clear you of the charges against you.

In some cases, your attorney may be able to present your case to the prosecuting attorney and get your case dismissed even before it goes to trial.

    In Summation...

Petit Larceny is no small crime in the state of New York and could result in jail time if you don't have a criminal defense attorney working on your behalf.

We know people make mistakes, and it is understandable that you might have to pay a price for your crime, but if you are a first time offender, don't take the chance that you could spend time in jail for a "petty" larceny.

5 Common Joint Venture Mistakes Internet Marketers Make

As a joint venture broker, and mentor to many marketers launching new products, I see a lot of Internet marketers making many of the same mistakes.

Some of these easy-to-correct mistakes can mean the difference between a wildly successful launch, and one that doesn't even sell enough of the product to cover development costs.

Here are five all-to-common mistakes that can kill a joint venture product launch before it even gets out of the staring blocks.

    1) Making Joint Venture Partners Jump Through Hoops

Often the super affiliates and busy website owners that you approach won't go through an elaborate sign-up process to register as an affiliate/JV partner. Some will love your product idea and begin to sign-up as an affiliate, but as soon as they see that they need to register (and confirm) in numerous different places, many will NOT complete the registration process.

If they need 20 passwords, and all kinds of secret handshakes just to peek at a review copy of your product, many will not waste their time.

It's your job to make it NO work for your joint venture partners. Sign them up, send them their log-in information, and only ask them to verify their details.

Provide them with a fully-functioning FINAL version of your product for them to review so that they can decide if it's even appropriate for their customers.

    2) Not Giving Joint Venture Partners Enough Lead Time

Many busy super affiliates have promotional calendars flowed out over a month in advance. Some have commitments with partners that go out for several months.

If you request a joint venture with less than two weeks lead time, you should EXPECT most affiliates to politely decline to participate... or even not to respond to such an unprofessional request.

    3) Not Deconflicting Launch Dates.

There is nothing sadder than planning a "big" launch, putting all of the pieces in place, and then finding out a few days before that "Mr. Big" also has a launch planned for the same day. It's even worse if "Mr. Big" has already recruited your desired JV partners to promote his launch.

The way to avoid this one is to tap into launch databases such as the one maintained by The International Association of Joint Venture Brokers (at http://IAJVB.ORG)

    4) Not Answering The "WIIFM" For Potential Joint Venture Partners

Your potential joint venture partners have LOTS of potential products to promote. So they silently wonder why they should promote yours over a competitor's product. It's your job to answer that question and many other "silent questions" in order to recruit the joint venture partners.

In answering the "What's In It For Me" (WIIFM) you need to explain how it's going to help them, help their customers, and you need to frame all of your answers from their perspective. Potential joint venture partners, and their customers, don't care about you and your products. They care about what you can do for them.

    5) Having A Product That No One Wants

It doesn't matter how original, clever, cheap, or needed a product is - if the market doesn't want it, you have a flop. If your potential joint venture partners sense that their customers won't buy it, they'll logically decline promoting your product.

Far too many products are created that the market doesn't want, or wants but is unwilling to pay for. You absolutely MUST do your market research first and verify that the market really wants and will buy your proposed product. Better still, they should be already buying a similar product.

Look carefully at your joint venture project plans. If they have any of these glaring mistakes, correct them before approaching potential joint venture partners. You'll have much better results, and you'll be glad that you read this article.
